About The Poster: For the Catalan people, the traditional dance of the Sardana is a symbol of cultural unity and pride. Much in the way that French Canadians in Quebec are unified by language and a history which many feel sets them apart, the people of Catalunya have fought now for over 150 years for independence and recognition by Spain of their different cultural background. Between the 1940s and 1970s, the Spanish dictator Franco worked to assimilate Catalunya to Spain, forbiding that Catalan be spoken and intervening in cultural propagation in general. This period of struggle for the people of Catalunya has only enlivened their sense of unity and pride; the Sardana, which consists primarily of people joining hands in a circle, symbolizes this unity and strenght. Although this poster is for the "dia de la sardana" (day of the sardana), which in 1965 was held on April 25th, the Sardana is not danced only once a year but rather every sunday in Barcelona and a Feste's (festivals and celebrations in general).
