First, a definition of terms: a maquette is the original design from which a poster is made.
It is a one-of-a-kind piece by definition - it is the original artwork for a poster. So, while a poster is wonderful (and I sell many) a maquette, to me, is even better because it is the idea and design behind the poster.
This drawing was purchased in Italy from a collector who was is as crazy about vintage paper as I am - but, unlike me, he has access to archives from numerous artists and printers in Milan and surrounding areas...
Showing a woman happily floating on a cube of Kub bouillion and waving to passers by, this maquette is spectacular ...
The history of Kub is equally momentous: Created in 1912 (the year of this maquette) the Bouillon KUB in bars appeared with a massive promotional campaign, to reach the widest public possible : samples were given out on the street to taste, demonstration vans toured the streets, promotional parades, posters, enamel plaques (representing posters and packets) on walls, sandwich board men along city streets. The KUB presentation continued to change up to the year 1938 : first presented in a cylindrical metal drum, then in a rectangular stand-up box, then in a bright yellow and red square (the brands' colours). "The Bouillon KUB : insist on the K!" (nestle.com)
To me this original maquette was just too special to pass up. It measures 11 x 14.5 inches, was created in oil pastels and is in very good condition.
To the best of my knowledge and research, this poster was never produced, making this drawing/maquette a rare, and unusual piece.
It has been archived since it was produced and shows no aging, no foxing, and no wear.
It is fabulous!
