Sergio Ruffolo (1916-1989) was one of the greatest pioneers and artists of Italian Modernist graphic design. He studied law, enrolled in the Italian Resistance during WWII, was arrested and taken prisoner by the Gestapo but managed to survive and go on to become one of Italy's best loved and most cherished national graphic design treasures. One of his first mandates was to design and brand the magazine of the Federation of Socialist Youth in 1948 - but from then on, his assignments became decidedly more capitalist: Agip, one of Italy's largest multi-nationals called upon Ruffolo to create its advertising campaigns ...Ruffolo worked as a freelance graphic artist for many Italian corporations, political parties and state companies including RAI, the state–owned television channel. He participated in the Italian Graphic Design Collective in London in 1967 and between 1967 and 1970 made some campaigns for the Ministry of Public Works - Office of the Inspector General on traffic circulation and road safety. His assignments ranged from logos and advertising campaigns to annual reports, editorial design, title sequences for tv programs and various promotional materials. He also painted alternating equestrian subjects to landscapes, all set in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. In the seventies and eighties Ruffolo worked on the design, layout and restructuring of newspapers and magazines in Italy and the US, including but not limited to: Il Giornale di Calabria Il Mattino di Napoli, Mondoperaio, the monthly Psi, 1975 is the project for the Republic, promoted by Eugenio Scalfari, Harbors Sea Space, The European and The Voice of Naples, the 'Official': Mantua, Modena and Reggio ('80-'81), La Natione of Florence and Il Resto del Carlino of Bologna, Il Crocodile 1983, 1984 Reporter, South of the Trent 1984-1985.Ruffolo's influence as a mid-century artist can not be overstated - his color-blocking techniques can be seen throughout the design world almost immediately after he began using it, and this poster, which was produced for an exhibition of Ruffolo's works that was held in Hamburg in 1962 is a testament to the skill, the vision, and the beauty of a man who's talent was both limitless and timeless. Poster measures 34.5 x 48 inches and was just professionally linen back. Condition A-/evident folds and creasing.
