About The Poster: Issued by the US Government Printing Office, this poster is an American version of an earlier WWI French poster called On Les Aura (we have it on this site, look under Abel Faivre). The image is identifiably similar, although the face of the soldier in this version is notable more 'Americanized' than his earlier French cousin. When this poster was on display at Texas A+M University, the description of it read (in part) We Have Just Begun To Fight!, issued by the OWI in 1943, borrows from American and French history. The title comes from Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones' famous reply to the British demand for surrender in 1779, "I have not yet begun to fight." The image of the soldier copies a similar figure from a French poster issued during World War I.
This poster occupies pride of place in many American and European museum collections.
Poster is linen backed and in very good condition.
