About the Poster: This poster is from a series produced by the General Post Office (GPO, 1660-1969) for schools across the British Empire, designed by John Vickery. This series, the seventh produced by the GPO, contained four posters; one for Barbados, one for Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), one for Australia, and in the case of this poster, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). The theme of these posters was "Outposts of Empire" and the message behind them was that despite the geographical distance between the United Kingdom and these colonies, there were strong similarities. Even in these far-away lands, the familiar postman delivers the mail.
