Due to the Treaty of Lausanne, the island, together with the Dodecanese, was officially assigned to Italy. It became the core of their possession of the Isole Italiane dell'Egeo. Following the Italian Armistice of September 8th, 1943, the British attempted to get the Italian garrison on Rhodes to change sides. It was introduced to commercial publishing in France in the late 1800s, and there it had its most exquisite expression. The pochoir process would use from 20 to 250 different stencils applied to a black-and-white collotype print from a photograph. The collotypes are affixed to stencil sheets of metal or board, and the patches to be colored are cut out. Each color to be applied uses a separate pompon, or brush of coarse, shortly-cropped animal hair, to sponge or dab on the paint. His large paintings are created very rapidly and impulsively. Despite his unconventional technique, he considers himself a historical painter working with abstract subject matter. Mathieu was born into a family of bankers and first studied law and philosophy before deciding to turn to the visual arts. In 1947, when he exhibited at the Salon of New Realities, he exhibited a cloth made of texture spots springing directly from the tube in a technique attributed to Jackson Pollock. He later exhibited in the United States and Japan. Not content with being 'just a painter', Mathieu has invented a 'lifestyle' which for him is the raison d'être of an artist: this belief is most evident wth is work as editor of a multi-disciplinary magazine devoted to the arts. Klinger was the first to use a logo not only on a product itself, but also on buildings, billboards and advertisements - essentially creating a lasting and unforgettable image of a brand for consumers. In Klinger's 1923 presentation of his studio and its designs, he wrote: "The moving spirit of Vienna poster-designers whose work is reproduced in this production, is Julius Klinger, at once the oldest and best known among them. For more than a quarter of a century he has devoted himself to this special line of art; he was twenty when he began and is now forty-eight. From the first he gave up all his time and thought to his work, for he is a poster-designer body and soul. His entire cosmos is bound up with it. America is the land of his heart's desire. But for him America is but a theoretical conception for he has never had the good luck to see it for himself and experience its life. It may be that just for this reason his longings are the more intense. America as he conceives it means spacious style, World Power and an eye for the future. Klinger's posters bear relation to life as it really is. He knows that in the poster, this intellectual artifice, he can express the most trivial things of everyday life. This belief has enabled him to gather around him a number of congenial spirits and his Americanized ideas in weary, stale Europe are finding more and more supporters. Klinger is not unknown in America. His posters have been frequently reproduced there and have gained much appreciation from connoisseurs for the purity of their lines." Klingers portfolio included designs from some of these other 'congenial spirits' - Cosl & Frey (described in the portfolio are 'two thirty years old men of slender build are at once long tried friends and members of the Klinger group. They have gained much fame in Vienna: Pregnancy of lines, originality of coloration and forcefulness of ideas are the most striking features of their performances') and Willrab (described as 'This blond giant, famous goalkeeper and passionate dancer is most serious in his art. The two of us spent hours staring at what are the paper prints of a military-type of board game issued in France - a game where there once appears to have been a key to who the figures were but that was lost centuries ago... the faces and characters are in and of themselves fairly fascinating and taken as a group these three pieces are a hoot, as well as an incredible historical find. To wit: " ...the prints seem to me to contain a wealth of indirect evidence about things like customs and social status and attitudes to education and maybe a whole lot more besides... it's perhaps quite logical to most people and second nature to historians. S. Gilbert (1836–1911) and the composer Arthur Sullivan (1842–1900). The two men collaborated on fourteen comic operas between 1871 and 1896, of which H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado are among the best known. Gilbert, who wrote the words, created fanciful "topsy-turvy" worlds for these operas where each absurdity is taken to its logical conclusion—fairies rub elbows with British lords, flirting is a capital offense, gondoliers ascend to the monarchy, and pirates turn out to be noblemen who have gone wrong. Sullivan, six years Gilbert's junior, composed the music, contributing memorable melodies that could convey both humor and pathos.

Their operas have enjoyed broad and enduring international success and are still performed frequently throughout the English-speaking world. Gilbert and Sullivan introduced innovations in content and form that directly influenced the development of musical theatre through the 20th century. The operas have also influenced political discourse, literature, film, and television and have been widely parodied and pastiched by humorists. Producer Richard D'Oyly Carte brought Gilbert and Sullivan together and nurtured their collaboration. He built the Savoy Theatre in 1881 to present their joint works (which came to be known as the Savoy Operas) and founded the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which performed and promoted Gilbert and Sullivan's works for over a century.

This poster was printed by Stafford & Co.
