Since the family had little money, his formal education ended at the age of 13 when his family could no longer afford to keep him in school. His father, a typographer, placed him in a three-year apprenticeship with a lithographer.

He studied lithography, which was, at that time, a new and economical method of reproducing colored designs. His research into this revolutionary process took him to London where he remained until 1866. He then returned to Paris and set up his shop where he began printing theatrical posters in a remarkably innovative way. Chéret used these lithographic techniques to create lively, mobile images. His sense of design, his free-hand style, and his ability to smoothly incorporate written messages into his pictures were skills that combined to produce posters that attracted immediate attention and interest.

Like Toulouse-Lautrec after him, Chéret was influenced by the Post-Impressionists and by Japanese prints. He used more detail and depicted inviting, unframed scenes of figures caught in mid-action. His posters contained an unusually large amount of lettering, which brought the advertising component of his designs into prominence. His principles of good poster design influenced Toulouse-Lautrec and paved the way for many other poster artists of the day. Although rather bold in style at the turn of the century, Chéret later returned to a milder, more impressionistic treatment of his subjects. Considered the father of the modern poster, he revolutionized the field of advertising for his contributions in design and printing techniques, designing over 1000 posters.

Date: 1903
Size: 35 x 49.5 inches
Artist: Damaré

The Parisiana was a playhouse or theatre, much like the Folie Bergeres. He studied for four years at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Cabanel, training which gave him a unique position among the graphic humorists of France. Whether comedy or tragedy, dainty triviality or political satire, his work is instinct with the profound sincerity of the artist. He set Pierrot upon a lofty pedestal among the imaginary heroes of France, and established Mimi Pinson, frail, lovable, and essentially good-hearted, in the affections of the nation. Willette is at once the modern Watteau of the pencil, and the exponent of sentiments that move the more emotional section of the public.

Always a poet, and usually gay, fresh, and delicate, in his presentation of idylls exquisitely dainty and characteristically Gallic, illustrating the more 'charming' side of love, often pure and sometimes unnecessarily materialistic. In Italy there was less of a poster mania than in France, where poster collecting was a phenomenon starting in the 1890s. There were fewer clubs, expositions, publications and galleries which promoted posters and poster collecting. Equally important, a high percentage of poster overruns were destroyed. It is believed that thousands of posters were thrown away when the Fascist regime took power. Printing warehouses were swept clean of anything reflecting bourgeois values.' Conventum saw its first album on the ultra small (and now ultra collectible) label Le Tamanoir. At the time, Conventum was developing a progressive 'sound' crossing chamber music and rock. Their music was also highly theatrical, acoustic and satirical, and in many ways - if not really avant-garde - sufficiently groundbreaking, while also retaining a traditional folk music sound. Around that time, they recorded a concert in their studio. Conventum is best appreciated with a good mastering of the French language (their French singing is actually quite easily understood), but can be easily enjoyed by most adventurous progheads, as the music is often breathtaking. Both albums are highly recommended to any progheads into chamber “rock” music, the way only the Quebecois, the Finns and the Belgians can do it. In the 1970s and 80s (and today!) there was a great uprising of nationalist sentiment amongst the French population of the province who felt that they had been treated as second-class citizens for too long. Born in Montreal, Michel began his career at an early age appearing in a Canadian television series (Rue des Pignons) and in TV commercials. Four years later, in 1974, Rivard and other members of Théâtre Sainfoin, formed the group Beau Dommage. Beau Dommage became a very popular group, and as a result of his songwriting ability Rivard's popularity increased as well. Perhaps his most popular song from this era is "La complainte du phoque en Alaska".

Although Beau Dommage disbanded in 1978, there were reunion concerts in 1984 and 1994, both of which Rivard participated in. In 1978, as a sign of his increased prestige, Michel opened for Maxime Forestier and was accompanist for Forestier at the Olympia in Paris. Although an unlikely pairing, it resulted in a continued friendship. Marianne Buzenet bought the Parisian couture house Kerteux Soeurs and turned it into a successful business.
