On the lower right, the young men leave happily to war; their bayonets slung over their arms, ready - no, willing - to go off to certain death. To the left, in the background is the cathedral going up in smoke (yes, yes, I get the irony...) It is quite a masterpiece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause the poster is unsigned, I initially had a hard time finding its provenance, but like all posters, it has a history and a story: it was produced by a very well known and quite famous British artist by the name of Frank Brangwyn. Following the Italian Armistice of September 8th, 1943, the British attempted to get the Italian garrison on Rhodes to change sides. This was anticipated by the German Army, which succeeded in occupying the island. (While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed 'M. Montaut', she also used the name 'Gamy,' an anagram for Magy.)  The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncolored prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each color. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The coloring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. In the 1970s and 80s (and today!) there was a great uprising of nationalist sentiment amongst the French population of the province who felt that they had been treated as second-class citizens for too long. This social and political malaise was very evident in the outpouring of music and performance pieces - and posters of same - during that period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInternet research indicates that Langevin 1938-1995 was a poet and animator who worked extensively in the province. He was also a part of the show Songs and Poems of the Resistance - 1971 - to which I believe these posters refer. He won the Du Maurier prize posthumously in 1996, the Canadian Governor General Award in 1978 and the Alain-Grandbois prize in 1994. In looking up board games and their history I came across a blog entry by someone which seemed to confirm some of what I had been thinking. To wit: \" ...the prints seem to me to contain a wealth of indirect evidence about things like customs and social status and attitudes to education and maybe a whole lot more besides... it's perhaps quite logical to most people and second nature to historians. That doesn't detract, for me, from the elegant thinking I see in deciding to sift through a pile of otherwise inconsequential illustrated material to learn more about history. That sort of detective work makes history more appealing, more alive somehow. ...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the meantime, a few little excerpts from the 'The Development of the English Board Game, 1770 - 1850' by Caroline G. Goodfellow IN: The International Journal for the Study of Board Games. \"There are only a few basic methods of playing [board] games and over the past 250 years many thousands of variations have been created. The basic methods of play come down to four types – race games, strategy games, table games and card games. Many were originally developed for adults and were later adapted for children. The gestural lines of the lithographic crayon and the war theme recall the posters of Steilen and Willette, and Renouard himself was obviously a gifted artist. Victory bonds did more than generate capital, they made civilians feel involved in their national militaries. The lottery was said to have hired some of France's best designers, developing a corpus of some of the most effective posters in history. This particular piece is signed in the plate by C.
