The declaration of the rights of man in the world. These two ideas have given birth to this poster exhibition commemorating the bi-centenary of the French Revolution – a project also inspired by the Warsaw Biennale which, since its creation in 1966, has been a melting pot of social and cultural images. Having involved 66 contemporary artists in this project, we asked them to express, from their own cultural viewpoint, the power of the concept of human rights. Our commitment was to promote their freedom of expression through the execution of this project. Several hundred copies of this event have been distributed and will be shown simultaneously around the world. Carried by this wave, other creators, researchers, and participants on the struggle for human rights have contributed to the bilingual book accompanying the exhibition. “FOR HUMAN RIGHTS, histories, images, and voices” brings together texts, reports, and thoughts on this common denominator: LIBERTY. It was during the communist regime, a time when culture was closely monitored by the state, that Polish artists found liberation in poster art. Ironically, this foremost public art form became ground for individual expression. During that period, the cultural institutions, of theatre and cinema especially, flourished as they were funded by government agencies. Artists freshly out of the fine arts academy flocked towards poster production as the demand for this art was rapidly growing. The result became some of the most unique and expressive posters the world has ever seen - and artworks in themselves.

Poster has a rip on the bottom and ruffle margins. Miro’s surrealist style was born from his use of automatic drawing – a way to undo previous established techniques in painting. Miro and Andre Masson were considered the beginning of the Surrealist movement but Miro chose not to be labeled as a Surrealist in order to be free of experiment with other artistic movements/styles.
