But here's the thing - there isn't a baby at the center of the comedy, and that's the crux of this entertainment.

The plot concerns a husband who is so bored with country life that he dreams up the idea of having an illegitimate son in London as a way to get into town for an occasional 'night off.' When his wife decides that the child should be adopted, the expected comic tissue of falsehoods and misunderstandings frays and hilarity ensues. Adapted from German by A. Bourchier, the farce opened in London in 1896 to what a local critic termed 'much mirth.' Several years later, when the play had crossed the Atlantic and entered the repertory of David de Wolf - cleverly called the Baby's 'chaperone' on the poster - and his troupe of traveling players, that understated review was translated into the more American 'howling success.'

The cast and director would've been unfamiliar with the British hinterlands, so this splendid design concentrates on the hi-jinks of the characters and their situation. Conventum saw its first album on the ultra small (and now ultra collectible) label Le Tamanoir. At the time, Conventum was developing a progressive 'sound' crossing chamber music and rock. Their music was also highly theatrical, acoustic and satirical, and in many ways - if not really avant-garde - sufficiently groundbreaking, while also retaining a traditional folk music sound. Around that time, they recorded a concert in their studio. Conventum is best appreciated with a good mastering of the French language (their French singing is actually quite easily understood), but can be easily enjoyed by most adventurous progheads, as the music is often breathtaking. Both albums are highly recommended to any progheads into chamber “rock” music, the way only the Quebecois, the Finns and the Belgians can do it. Around 1890 he began working as a lithographer in Cheret’s Chaix printing house. His first artistic poster was created in 1893 and during the following ten years a number of very famous lithographs dealing with bicycling and other activities were produced by him. Conventum was slow to start out, but saw its first album on the ultra small (and now ultra collectible) label Le Tamanoir. At the time, Conventum was developing a progressive music 'sound', fusing chamber music and rock. Their music was highly theatrical, acoustic, and satirical, and in many ways - if not really avant-garde - sufficiently groundbreaking. During this period, they recorded a concert in their studio. Conventum is best appreciated with a good mastering of the French language (their French singing is actually quite neutral and easily understood), but can be easily enjoyed by most adventurous progheads, as the music is often breathtaking. Both albums are much recommended to any progheads into chamber “rock” music, the way only Quebecois, the Finns and Belgians can do it. These posters are among the last works Vittorio produced before he passed in 2008. Vittorio's posters are collected worldwide, with works in important museums such as the MoMA. But it is above all as a poster artist that he has made his greatest mark, creating more than 300 posters and earning a prodigious number of international prizes and awards...After spending most of his childhood in Venice, Vittorio Fiorucci left Italy in 1951 to settle in Montreal. In the 1960s, he had already created a logotype for the Le Château stores and a provocative series of erotic posters. From that moment on, his style stood apart for its pure lines, its vivid colours and an especially unmistakeable sarcasm. Undeniably, his best-known creation is still the green mascot for the Just for Laughs Festival, but he also earned great success with his illustrations for the National Bank, the Opéra de Montréal, the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu hot air balloon festival and the Salon des métiers d’art.

During the preparation of the 1997 Kyoto Conference on Climate Change, Vittorio was the only Canadian to be invited to create a poster for the event; he was competing amongst the best poster artists in the world. But that was not the first time Vittorio's name was associated with a humanitarian cause; as early as 1967, he created an environmental poster titled "Don't Cut the Trees". He also made an imaginative statement with his "Women’s Lib" poster and with "Adieu Montréal", an image reflecting the demolition of Montreal's urban heritage."

Source: Info Design Canada (http://www.infodesigncanada.com/infodesign/en/circle_of_honour/vittorio/bio.html)

Poster is in very good condition and ready to frame.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0056/7532/products/Choko730__RED__Les-Jours-sont-Contes_1.jpg?v=1649717966
opera-de-montreal-2006-2007-red
2006 Contemporary Opera De Montreal Poster - Montplaisir + Pelletier (Red)

Date: 2006
Size: 24 x 36 inches
Notes: Poster, Large Poster
Artist: Montplaisir, Marc and Pelletier, Jacques-Lee, Printer: OrangeTango

About The Poster: The Opera de Montreal was founded in 1980 and performs at Montreal's famed Place des Arts. S. Gilbert (1836–1911) and the composer Arthur Sullivan (1842–1900). The two men collaborated on fourteen comic operas between 1871 and 1896, of which H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado are among the best known. Gilbert, who wrote the words, created fanciful "topsy-turvy" worlds for these operas where each absurdity is taken to its logical conclusion—fairies rub elbows with British lords, flirting is a capital offense, gondoliers ascend to the monarchy, and pirates turn out to be noblemen who have gone wrong. Sullivan, six years Gilbert's junior, composed the music, contributing memorable melodies that could convey both humor and pathos.

Their operas have enjoyed broad and enduring international success and are still performed frequently throughout the English-speaking world. Gilbert and Sullivan introduced innovations in content and form that directly influenced the development of musical theatre through the 20th century. The operas have also influenced political discourse, literature, film, and television and have been widely parodied and pastiched by humorists. Producer Richard D'Oyly Carte brought Gilbert and Sullivan together and nurtured their collaboration. He built the Savoy Theatre in 1881 to present their joint works (which came to be known as the Savoy Operas) and founded the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which performed and promoted Gilbert and Sullivan's works for over a century.

This poster was printed by Stafford & Co. The auction catalog reads: " 'I often ask myself what they, the curious of the year 2000, will think of us, whom we are cut off from by a century of dreadful events; them, knowing that which we don't yet know and that we nearly suspect, what will they say of our old frivolity with all that has passed? Won't they pity us, like we today have pity for the aristocratic society whose ancient prints we refer to with carelessness and levity?' Thus mused Pierre Veber in his prefacing comments for the Programmes Illustres, a hardcover compendium of some of the most beautiful menus, invitations, business cards and announcements of the Belle Epoque. Little could he have known how off the mark his thoughts were,.." (Rennert) Each sheet is 9.25 x 12.5 inches, and the images on the sheet vary - this one, by Louis Oury as a cover for the Programmes Illustre is approx. 6.5 x 8.5 inches. Some rare purists prefer to wear blue and white, colors of the city of Bayonne. The festivals include musical and street performances, traditional dances, parades, and fireworks. The first "Fêtes de Bayonne" called "The big summer festival" took place on July 13th, 1932. It was created by a group of friends belonging to the Aviron Bayonnais rugby team. They wanted to create in Bayonne, celebrations similar to those of San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain (famous for their Running of the Bulls).

This poster is in excellent condition, linen backed and measures approximately 33 x 22 inches.

Date: 1964
Size: 39 x 55 inches
Artist: Unknown

About the Poster:

I don’t remember how old I was when I saw this movie for the first time, but I was a little girl and although there is no sex per se, it was pretty risqué (that I remember) and Robert Redford was so beautiful… Jane Fonda wasn’t too bad either! He owes much of his fame to public appearances, in which he combines a dandyish pose with a curious mixture of popular city humor and irony, dished up in an uncut Rotterdam accent. He is arguably the godfather of Dutch performance poets.

There is an unmistakable link between Deelder’s poetry and the Dutch ultra-realists of the 1950s, and an even stronger kinship with the carefree anarchism of the 1960s. Many of his poems are on an exciting collision course with established taste. Jules Deelder has found the recipe for successfully combining a deadpan exterior and crass realism with the comic effect of irony. He calls himself a ‘neon realist,’ a ‘neon romantic’ and a ‘neon comedian’. Deelder has a rare command of a register, mimicking the language of soaps as effortlessly as that of military rhetoric or the quasi-profound verbiage of esoteric or antiquated cultures. A rough translation from Marc Choko's definitive work on Quebec posters describes Adam as follows: "Born in Mont Saint Hilaire, Adam started his career as an illutrator at Le Jour, with a head full of psychedelic posters and reproductions of Toulouse Lautrec and Alphonse Mucha plastered on his walls from floor to ceiling from his adolescence onwards. In 1976 he left for Paris, installed himself in Montmartre where he experimented with painting. Returning to Montreal a year later, he went looking for poster contracts with theaters and film producers. He never looked back. Adam's curiosity led him to various graphic and technical styles - he designed company logos, album covers, and editorial illustrations. He has worked in film and now designs, among other things, web sites as well as posters. He refuses interviews, does not enter his works in design competitions, and continues to paint, design posters, and create websites.
