From his humble beginnings as a miner's son, he too worked as a miner before moving to Paris in 1925. Working a variety of jobs in factories for Citroen and Renault, he trained in painting at É\u003cspan\u003ecole du Montparnasse, at the advice of his friend Pablo Picasso. He joined the National Labour union and became involved with the Indélicates, creating and publishing an anarchist magazine, and later joined the French Communist Party. He remained politically active after the German invasion of France, actively opposing Nazi occupation and resisting the notion of \"degenerate\" modernist art through his work. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHis work was characterized by bold shapes and colors, in the post-cubist figurative style.
