In France, Quinquina is a collective name for alcoholic bitters (aperitif) having quinine as one of their main ingredients. Quinquina is also known as Peruvian Bark. It originates from South America and was introduced to Europe in the 17th century by Spanish missionaries. Though the quinquina's trademark playing card is better-known as a "Jack" to the English-speaking public, to the Francophone he's known as the "Valet", hence the title of the poster.
