Artist: Wright, Blanche Fisher
This vintage matted book sheet is from The Peter Patter Book of Nursery Rhymes, an old children's rhyming book authored by Leroy F. Jackson and illustrated by Blanche Fisher Wright. Wright (1887 - 1938) was a children's book illustrator active in the 1910s. She is recognized for illustrating The Real Mother Goose, published in 1916, although little else is known about her. Thankfully, her work speaks for itself: she manages to frame beautifully intimate scenes showing children freely exploring the corners of their imagination, seemingly unaware of anything existing outside of their world. At once tender and delightful, insightful yet candid, her lyrical illustrations demonstrate the true pleasures of domestic life.
This illustration's caption features the last two lines of the poem 'Army of the Queen': "So toot your little trumpet/For the Army of the Queen". The full book can be found here. We chose a number of Ms. Fisher Wright's period illustrations and have had them double-matted to showcase (and show off!) their lovely, vibrant colours. We think these pieces will look lovely, either single or in sets, in a child's room, a nursery, or any place where children (and their parents) congregate.
