This original print is from a vintage edition of La Presse, a Canadian newspaper. It was founded in 1884, as it recently went digital, this piece is really quite the find! This particular image was from a drawing by Charles W. Simpson (1878–1942), a Montreal-born artist, illustrator, and member of the R.C.A. (Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts). He more notable works include illustrations of the Saint Lawrence river for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, his diploma submission 'Indian Summer, Montreal Harbour' which is now in the National Gallery of Canada permanent collection, and commissions for big-name industries.
Signed in the plate by Charles Simpson, who added the caption "Notre Dame street in Trois Rivieres, one of the oldest roads in Canada," above his name in the lower right-hand corner. Recently professionally matted in bottle green, this print would look wonderful in any living room or office.
