This poster created in 1939 by Ivar Gull celebrates Norway's midnight sun, a natural phenomenon that occurs in the summer months in places north of the Arctic Circle or south of the Antarctic Circle when the sun remains visible at the local midnight. Around the summer solstice (approximately 21 June in the Northern Hemisphere and 22 December in the Southern Hemisphere) the sun is visible for the full 24 hours, given fair weather. VisitNorway suggests (for those unafraid of chilly summer nights) doing some midnight golfing, midnight swimming, midnight fishing... and this poster suggests midnight walking and socializing!
The beauty, ease, and idyllicism of Norwegian life is perfectly encapsulated in Gull's poster... it's enough to convince you to book a vacation there! In the meantime, capture some of the midnight magic in your own home and frame this poster for your living room, kitchen, bedroom...
Poster is linen backed and in excellent condition, with minor repairs in image (see photos). From a private collection.
