About The Poster: This original French poster was for a 1969 exhibition featuring '50 toiles de maîtres' or 50 master canvases. The event was held at Galerie Paul Petrides from May to June of 1969. Petrides was an art dealer who, according to his obituary, "made a fortune in the post-war years by selling to American and Japanese buyers. [He] was later involved in scandal when stolen paintings were found in his possession. He was sentenced to three years' imprisonment in 1979, which he did not serve because of his age".
This exhibition poster features a 1905 oil painting by Bonnard called "Deux élégantes, Place de Clichy" (Two Elegant Women, Place de Clichy). It shows the bustling lifestyle of the middle-class where gazes are exchanged and it's impossible not to brush up against one another. The artist even puts the viewer at the same level as the passerbys so that we feel like we're one amongst the crowd - it's small details like this that make Bonnard a master painter!
