About the Poster: The poster for the 1930 film The Blue Angel (Der Blaue Engel in German), directed by Josef von Sternberg, and starring Emil Jannings, Marlene Dietrich, and Kurt Gerron. Filmed simultaneously in English and German, and based on Heinrich Mann's 1903 novel Professor Unrat, the film follows the transformation of a respectable professor into a cabaret clown, symbolizing his descent into madness. Marlene Dietrich's performance in The Blue Angel brought her international fame and provided her with a contract with Paramount Pictures in the US.
About the Artist: Dorothea Fischer-Nosbisch (1921-2009) was a German graphic artist and stamp maker. She is the founder of the design co-op "Novum" and has designed several stamps for the German postal service (1976, 1984, 1991). She worked as a professor and freelance artist in Frankfurt.
This poster is a rerelease from 1963 of the original produced in 1930.
