About the Artist:
Jules Cavaillès (1901-1977) was a French painter and one of eight members of the Poetic Realists (Les Peintres de la réalité poétique), a term coined in 1949 by Gisèle d'Assailly. The artists shared a studio, a love of color, and a desire to represent nature and the human form under the best and happiest of lights. Theirs was not a movement of extremism, war, illness, or darkness. They stood for light, sunshine, happiness, and health, often depicting the French countryside, circus acts, scenes of intimacy, etc. Cavaillès, in particular, tended to break down shapes and colors, similarly to Matisse. Before 1950 when drawing became essential to his work, he would play with bright colors without prescribing them to set lines or shapes.
