The French name "Bataclan" refers to a pun on the expression tout le bataclan
(the "kit and caboodle", or "all that jazz", or "the whole nine yards"), as well as to an old operetta by Offenbach. The building was designed in 1864 and has been used as a theatre, a dance hall, a music hall, and since the early 1970s, a venue for rock music.
Bataclan was immortalized in 2015 when it was the site of a terrorist attack that galvanized Paris. Closed for a year subsequently, it was reopened in 2016 when Sting performed a private concert for the families of those killed in the attack a year earlier.
