About the Lenox and Tilden Foundation : The Lenox and Tilden Foundation is a cornerstone of New York City's rich cultural history and a driving force behind the establishment of the New York Public Library. Formed from the combined legacies of philanthropist James Lenox, who donated his extensive collection of rare books and manuscripts, and Samuel J. Tilden, a former New York governor with a passion for literacy and learning, the Foundation was officially created in 1895. Tilden’s generous bequest and Lenox’s invaluable literary collection came together with the Astor Library, merging their resources to form what is now the New York Public Library.
