Size: 18.75 x 25.75 inches
Artist: Steinlen, Alexandre Theophil (After)
This vintage exhibition poster from 1977 is for a solo exhibition dedicated to the artwork of Alexandre Theophil Steinlen. The image used for the show is from a three-colour lithograph originally designed and printed in 1894, titled "À la Bodinière."
The two cats featured on the poster really are the perfect snapshot of the artist's work: felines were arguably his favourite muses, and he returned to them often. In fact, his most widely-recognized advertisement was for the cabaret La Tournée du Chat Noir, the 1896 poster featuring a black cat silhouetted against a burnt orange background—now an icon of the “poster craze” circa 1900. Even his Paris home had the name of "Cat's Cottage" - befitting for someone who made drawings, sculptures, paintings, and posters of cats.
The perfect gift for any cat lover!
