Artist: Hervé Télémaque
Artist Hervé Télémaque was born in Haiti in 1937, working in New York before moving to Paris to connect with the language he was educated in, and escape the racism he encountered in the states. There, he established a connection to the Surrealists in the 1960s but Télémaque himself never identified as part of the group. His work often explores his African roots and French politics, experimenting with painting, sculpting, collage-making and charcoal drawing. His style is known for its symbolism and puzzle-like graphics, and unsurprisingly was one of the precursors to the Pop Art movement.
