This particular poster advertises La Traviata, a three act opera by Giuseppe Verdi. It is based on La Dame aux Camélias (1852), a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas, fils. The story tells of Violetta Valéry, a woman who knows that she will die soon, exhausted by her restless life as a courtesan. At a party she is introduced to Alfredo Germont, who has been fascinated by her for a long time. During a toast, he celebrates true love and Violetta responds in praise of free love. The rest of the opera follows their turbulent relationship -- right up to her death.
