About The Poster: Chinese pin-ups, known as Shanghai Girls, emerged from 1920s- 1940s advertising, blending Art Deco style with modern Chinese fashion (like the qipao) to create glamorous figures for products like cigarettes, symbolizing urban sophistication and a burgeoning consumer culture before political shifts halted their production. While ancient Chinese art featured beautiful women, the distinct, commercially-driven pin-up culture of this era reflected Shanghai's unique "sin city" atmosphere, a vibrant mix of capitalism and culture, distinct from Western pin-ups but serving similar roles in popular appeal. Shangai Girl posters are iconic examples of early Chinese commercial art, showcasing a unique blend of Eastern aesthetics and Western modernity.
