Artist: Ludovico Cavaleri

About the artist:  Ludovico Cavaleri (1867–1942) was an Italian painter and print-maker, born in Milan. A self-taught member of the school of Lombard Naturalism in its last stages, Cavalieri abandoned his medical studies in 1888 to devote himself exclusively to painting. Having begun to specialise in seascapes under the influence of his contemporaries Pompeo Mariani and Giorgio Belloni in 1890, he later adopted the anti-naturalistic approach characteristic of the turn of the century, possibly as a result of his friendship with the Symbolist poet Gian Pietro Lucini. In addition to his large output of paintings, he also worked as an illustrator and commercial artist. A regular participant in the major exhibitions, he achieved considerable success on the art market and a number of official awards, including a gold medal at the International Exhibition of Munich in 1902.

About this piece: This beautiful poster belongs to the Portfolio "Gli Avvisi delle Officine G. Ricordi e C. Milano" (The Advertisements of the G. Ricordi & Co. Graphics Works, Milan) a famous and rare collection published around 1914, inspired by the famous French publication Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. The complete collection contains 70 color lithographic plates (chromolithographs) in a reduced size format. It represents an extraordinary testament to the golden age of the Italian advertising poster and Art Nouveau (Liberty style) graphics, closely tied to the world of opera and the Ricordi music publishing house.

Rather than relying on standard imagery of taverns or foaming mugs of beer for this poster, Cavaleri chose a poetic, topographical approach for this poster. The artwork depicts a scenic panoramic view of the city of Varese, highlighting local landmarks like the historic bell tower (campanile) of the Basilica of San Vittore.

This poster is in good condition, with small holes in all four corners and a small rip in the bottom corner (please see photos). Ready to frame!
