About The Poster:

The Maitre de l'affiche posters were a collection sent to poster aficionados and subscribers just before the turn of the century (roughly 1896-1900).

This is an original poster and not a reproduction. It is part of the collection of the Maitre de l'Affiche and is embossed with the seal of the Maitre.

Les Maitres de l'Affiche, Affiches Illustrees and Das Moderne Plakat" were produced for collectors at the turn of the century and have been sought after by collectors for over 100 years. Many of the posters in the series cannot be found today in any other format. They have not survived. Others are extremely rare and have sold for staggering amounts (for example see PL.122, PL.197, and PL.95). Individual plates can range in price from around $100 to over $10,000 USD. With the advent of more interest in posters, prices have been increasing steadily. Over the last 10 years, many plates have doubled or tripled in value. According to innewyork.com, “Vintage Posters appear to be immune to trends and make a particularly sound investment; their value increases about 10% a year...Why? Authentic vintage posters, which are defined as posters that were made by a company for a specific item at a specific time, are becoming increasingly scarce...”

About the Artist: A follower and protégé of Degas, Forain was influenced by Impressionist theories on light and color, he depicts scenes of everyday life: his watercolors, pastels, and paintings focused on Parisian popular entertainments and themes of modernity—the racetrack, the ballet, the comic opera, and bustling cafés. Forain was one of the most famous caricaturists of the Belle époque, and drew for Figaro for more than 30 years.

Plate is beautifully framed and ready to hang. From a private collection.
