When I opened L’Affichiste many years ago, I firmly believed that the best poster artists were those that were active during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. Thankfully, during the decades that followed, I realized the error of my ways and opened myself (and the gallery) to the virtuosity of contemporary posterists and their works.
In 2020 I approached Stephanie Aubin, a graphic designer and teacher at Montreal’s Dawson College, to see if we could create an opportunity for some of her students to exhibit their works at L’Affichiste. We presented a ‘mandate’ to her students: design a poster that represents a neighbourhood or area in Montreal. Stephanie and I picked 5 posters which we printed and sold at the gallery (with the students receiving 50% of the profits.) The project worked so well that we replicated it for subsequent academic years (2021, 2022).
This year, I suggested that the students collaborate on a Montreal-themed colouring book. Not only do I enjoy colouring in the evening as a way to quiet my mind, we also have a colouring corner in the gallery where little people (and sometimes bigger folks) can spend some time while their parents or friends are shopping in the gallery. With Stephanie once more at the helm, the students presented and refined their ideas and designs and we are happy and proud to present them here.
