Fabulous and very true to early 1900's advertising, this charming and colorful piece was originally exhibited as a point-of-sale marketing tool (you can tell this by noting the red twine and two small holes punched in the middle of the top of the piece. The store owner would have hung this piece in his store or store window).

This vintage maquette would be lovely in a kitchen, country home or gallery. It was used by a company called Au Gendarme (a gendarme is a policeman) which seems to have canned herring and mackerel in oil. The two gendarmes seem to be fighting over the fish - it's that good!  Herring was, at the beginning of the last century, one of the least expensive and most popular food, served either salted, smoked, or pickled. Printed on hard card stock and in very good condition, this piece does show some signs of age around the edges with small scuff marks (please see photos).
