About the poster: This vintage Buvard paper advertised Bloc Ostéra, a salt lick made to supplement animals’ diets with essential minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Salt licks are blocks which animals lick to support hydration, muscle function, and electrolyte balance, making them vital in animal husbandry to prevent deficiencies and promote health. For pigeons, they aid bone development, feather health, and overall vitality—especially important since grain diets often lack key minerals.
This is a Buvard or Blotting paper, a porous paper capable of absorbing a small amount of liquid by capillarity. It is mainly used to dry aqueous ink when writing or drawing with a pen: the ink can be deposited irregularly and dries slowly and can cause stains and smudges, the use of blotting paper is often necessary. With the fountain pen whose ink is regulated and dries more quickly, then other writing tools ( ballpoint pen, felt-tip pen) this use has become less frequent. At the beginning of the 20th century, blotting paper was an advertising medium of choice and blotting papers have become collector's items. (Wikipedia)
