This is an exhibition poster promoting a display of French paintings from the 19th and 20th century at Galerie Schmit. The gallery was founded in 1929, initially specialising in old masters, then after the war shifted to 19th- & 20th-century French painting. This exhibition displayed works by artists like Matisse, Fanin-Latour and Freisz. This poster features Henri Matisse's Le Reflet, from 1935.

Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a French artist celebrated for his bold use of color and fluid draughtsmanship. A painter, sculptor, and printmaker, he is regarded—alongside Picasso and Duchamp—as a defining figure of early 20th-century modern art. Initially labeled a Fauve (“wild beast”), Matisse later came to embody the classical tradition in French painting. His expressive command of color and line secured his place as one of modern art’s most influential masters.
