Artist: Roberto Matta

About the artist: Roberto Matta (1911–2002) was a Chilean-born painter and one of the most important figures of 20th-century surrealism. After studying architecture, Matta turned to painting and joined the Surrealist movement in Paris, where he was influenced by André Breton and other key figures. His visionary works explore the subconscious, space, and the human psyche, often blending abstract forms with cosmic, dreamlike imagery. Matta’s vibrant, dynamic compositions reflect both personal introspection and political turmoil, particularly in response to war and dictatorship. His influence extended across continents, bridging Latin American modernism and European avant-garde thought.

About the poster:  On March 23, 1968, the "Journée des Intellectuels pour le Vietnam" was held in Paris, a major gathering of artists, writers, and thinkers united in opposition to the U.S. war in Vietnam. Initiated by the French intellectual left, the event was a powerful display of solidarity with the Vietnamese people and a denunciation of American imperialism. Among the notable participants were Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Michel Leiris, and Paul Rebeyrolle, whose work at the time reflected a growing political engagement. Coming just weeks before the events of May ’68, this day marked a significant moment in the political and cultural activism of the era, highlighting the role of intellectuals in shaping public discourse and resistance.
