About the artist: Jean-Adrien Mercier was a French illustrator and poster artist celebrated for his elegant, modern style and masterful use of color. Born in Angers, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts there and later at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Beginning his career in the 1920s, Mercier became one of France’s most prolific cinema poster designers, creating over a hundred posters for major films between 1925 and 1942.

Alongside his film work, he designed striking advertising imagery for leading brands such as Cointreau, where he later served as artistic director. His posters are distinguished by stylized figures, bold composition, and a refined graphic sensibility that bridges Art Deco and modernist aesthetics.
