Roubille, Auguste

Of Auguste Roubille (1872-1955), Laurent Baridon and Martial Guédron wrote in 2006 that "like many of his contemporaries, Roubille was a caricaturist, illustrator, and poster artist." He worked often and prolifically for the periodical L'Assiette au beurre, exhibited watercolors and gouaches at many of the most important Parisian shows, and completed significant friezes for the 1900 Paris World's Fair. According to Baridon, Roubille "practiced a sleek design with large colored areas that was particularly well-suited for chromolithography. His highly decorative compositions were perfectly adaptable to the illustrated press."

The Revue à Poivre at the Scala theatre was a naughty cabaret that featured scantily dressed ladies, illicit dancers (and dancing), and suggestive clothing. It was, of course, a tremendously popular venue in the late 1800s and early 1900's.

The poster is from a private collection, linen-backed, in very good condition. Tax stamp on the second "A".
