About this poster: Gérald Zahnd (1941-2026) was a Swiss-born, Canadian artist and graphic designer. Arriving in Québec in the 1960s as the province pushed to modernize through cultural investment, Zahnd found work doing Public art installations and designing graphics for many of Montréal's Theatre companies. His works are a playful take on Swiss design style, which was characterized by minimalist graphics, asymmetric layouts, and sans-serif typefaces. Zahnd pushed back against the structure of Swiss style by incorporating bright, joyful colors, illustrative elements and humor. From 1968 to 1979, Zahnd produced over 130 posters for Montreal's Théâtre du Rideau Vert, the Théâtre Populaire du Québec, and the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde.

This poster advertises the 1969 performance of Les Belles-Sœurs at the Théâtre du Rideau Vert. The play premiered at the same theater the previous year, and was a huge success. It was the foundation of Michel Tremblay's career and had a significant influence on Québec's language, theatre scene, and culture. This poster is an original serigraph on thin cardboard from the artist's personal collection. In very good condition, with slight yellowing around the edges, please see photos.
